A Marrakech appeals court on Friday sentenced a university professor from Agadir to four years in prison and fined him 237,000 dirhams in a corruption and influence peddling case tied to alleged manipulation of master’s admissions and university diplomas, in a scandal widely referred to in Morocco as the “sale of master’s certificates.”
The same chamber sentenced another defendant held in custody to four years and a fine of about 237,000 dirhams, while a third defendant received two years in prison and a 187,000 dirham fine. Other defendants were given shorter prison terms and fines, and one was acquitted.
The case has drawn sustained attention since May 2025, when judicial police detained the professor as investigators examined allegations that students were enrolled in master’s programmes and awarded degrees in exchange for money or influence.
Local coverage at the time said the inquiry also reached lawyers and court officials.
