Arrests follow violent protests over quarry project in Kelaat Sraghna

Prosecutors in Kelaat Sraghna have ordered the detention of three individuals and charged a fourth with multiple offenses following violent clashes between residents and security forces earlier this week, judicial authorities said Thursday.

The suspects are being prosecuted on charges including incitement to commit crimes, participation in an armed gathering, assaulting public officials, damaging public property, and resisting the execution of a judicial order, according to the prosecutor at the local court. The fourth individual was released on bail set at 20,000 dirhams pending trial.

The charges stem from unrest in the village of Ouled Rami, where residents clashed with security forces on Tuesday during the enforcement of a court ruling to open a road leading to a quarry site.

The confrontation left nine auxiliary forces members and five gendarmes injured, along with a senior officer who sustained head injuries and was transferred for urgent medical treatment. Other injured personnel were treated at a local hospital.

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights criticized local authorities, blaming what it described as poor governance and lack of consultation for escalating tensions. The group called for an independent investigation into the incident, including the legality of the quarry project, and demanded the release of those detained.

Authorities have not publicly commented on the rights group’s claims, as investigations into the incident continue.
