Ghali names new military commanders in Polisario reshuffle

Polisario Front leader Brahim Ghali has reshuffled senior military and political positions, appointing Hamma Salama as chief of staff of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army and naming new commanders for key regions, according to official statements.

The appointments were formalised by presidential decree and followed by a handover ceremony chaired by Ghali in the presence of senior military officials.

The changes come ahead of the movement’s next congress, expected later this year, and reflect a broader reorganisation of leadership structures.

Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud, a former Polisario official, told Hespress the reshuffle aimed at consolidating support for Ghali ahead of the congress.

“The changes … come in the context of reinforcing the wing supporting Brahim Ghali,” he said.

He added that Salama’s appointment could position him as a potential successor while maintaining discipline within the armed wing.

Mohamed Lamine Nafaa, a former Polisario military official, told Hespress the move was also intended to project continuity.

“The military wing remains present and active,” he said, adding that the changes were meant to secure backing within the armed structure ahead of internal leadership decisions.
