Mezzour: Morocco’s diversified energy and strong reserves help weather global oil shocks

Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, said the ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict is driving up global oil and energy prices, but the kingdom is comparatively well placed to withstand the impact.

In an interview with BBC News Arabic, Mezzour attributed Morocco’s resilience to its diversified energy mix, including wind, solar, and other green sources, as well as strong financial reserves and economic flexibility that allow it to manage energy-related challenges.

Despite recent crises such as water shortages, floods, and the Al Haouz earthquake, the minister said Morocco’s economy remains diverse and capable of absorbing shocks.

On foreign investments, Mezzour noted that Morocco attracts capital from across the globe. Emirati investments make up roughly 19% of the total, while Europe, the United States, and other Gulf countries account for the remaining 81%.

He highlighted opportunities for energy-related investments, including oil storage, given Morocco’s stability and strategic location. The kingdom hosts Africa’s largest port and is completing Nador port, which is expected to rank among the world’s largest, enabling significant storage of petroleum products and strengthening regional energy security.

Mezzour stressed that these long-term infrastructure projects, launched over a decade ago, are progressing as planned and remain unaffected by the current Middle East crisis.
