Morocco has provided direct financial assistance to 15,000 families affected by recent floods, the Ministry Delegate in charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, announced Thursday. Each family received 6,000 dirhams ($610) to cover immediate needs.
Speaking at the weekly government press briefing, Lekjaa emphasized the “unique Moroccan approach” to supporting citizens in times of crisis, praising the solidarity shown by Moroccans across social levels in helping affected families.
The support program follows a large-scale evacuation operation, during which 188,000 people were moved from high-risk areas. Lekjaa said roughly 50,000 families lost income and could not remain in their homes, prompting the government to provide direct aid to cover expenses and ensure safety.
In addition, families who returned to partially damaged homes will receive 15,000 dirhams ($1,530) for repairs, while affected shops will also receive similar support. In rural areas where homes were completely destroyed, families will receive 140,000 dirhams ($14,300) per dwelling to rebuild, according to government assessments.
Lekjaa also highlighted broader infrastructure and agricultural impacts. Roads, bridges, and hydro-agricultural facilities were damaged, and the government has allocated funds for rapid repair. Farmers affected by the floods will receive direct support to resume agricultural and livestock activities ahead of the spring season, which is expected to be favorable.
The overall relief program has a budget of 3 billion dirhams ($306 million), with clear guidelines to ensure proper implementation and equitable distribution of aid.
Lekjaa concluded that the government’s priority remains “the safety of citizens and the continuity of their daily lives,” in line with instructions from King Mohammed VI.
