Teachers in Morocco’s Sidi Slimane province have launched an educational solidarity initiative to support students affected by recent flooding and currently housed in temporary shelters, the National Federation of Education (UMT) said Sunday.
In a statement, the provincial office of the union said the initiative reflects a national spirit of mobilization and solidarity within the education sector, aimed at easing the academic and psychological impact of the floods on affected families.
The union said the move is driven by teachers’ ethical and national responsibility to continue their educational mission under exceptional circumstances, while ensuring continuity of learning and equal access to education for displaced students.
Under the initiative, teachers have pledged to provide free, official classes to prevent learning disruptions, organize voluntary extra tutoring sessions outside regular school hours, and give special attention to exam-year students, including sixth-grade primary pupils, ninth-grade middle school students, and first- and second-year baccalaureate candidates.
Teachers also said they are ready to offer pedagogical and methodological support to help students catch up on missed core lessons, while adapting teaching methods to students’ psychological and social conditions in displacement centers.
The union said it is awaiting positive engagement from the provincial education directorate to help implement the initiative in support of public education and flood-affected families.
The statement stressed that the initiative is not a symbolic gesture but a practical expression of educators’ commitment to the public good, while praising the efforts of local authorities, civil protection services, security forces and volunteers involved in flood response operations in the province.
