Authorities release water from Idriss I dam amid flood concerns
Sunday 8 February 2026 - 18:34

The Sebou River Basin Agency began releasing water from Idriss I Dam Sunday at a rate of about 84 cubic meters per second, officials said.

The release is coordinated with Sidi Kacem provincial authorities to ensure safety measures downstream in the wake of recent heavy rainfall and flooding across the region.

As of Sunday morning, Idriss I Dam was 84.64% full, compared with 24.85% at the same time last year, holding roughly 956 million cubic meters of water. Overall, the Sebou Basin is at 85.55% capacity, led by the Allal El Fassi Dam at 95.47% and the Oued Al Wahda Dam at 88.86%, while four medium-sized dams have reached full capacity.

Recent releases from these dams have flooded hectares of farmland in the Gharb plains, particularly in the provinces of Kenitra and Sidi Kacem, isolating some rural communities. Authorities at both the Sebou and Loukkos basins have been operating under “exceptional mobilization” following recent storms, including Storm Marta.
