Morocco’s minister of equipment and water, Nizar Baraka, said a planned dam project could help prevent future flooding following recent extreme rainfall in northern regions.
Speaking during a field visit Friday to Oued El Makhazine Dam, near Ksar El Kebir, Baraka said the proposed Tfer Dam would play a key role in protecting the area from recurring floods.
He said the dam is expected to have a storage capacity of up to 900 million cubic meters, making it the largest facility in the Loukkos river basin.
“The Tfer Dam will definitively eliminate flood risks in the future,” Baraka said, calling for coordinated efforts to accelerate the project’s implementation.
However, the minister acknowledged that the project faces challenges, particularly related to land acquisition in areas where the dam will be built, notably in communities within Ouazzane Province.
He stressed the importance of the Interior Ministry’s role in resolving land issues and facilitating the project, noting that local authorities would be key to advancing the process.
The dam, expected to span large areas across Ouazzane Province and Larache Province, is seen as a long-term solution for flood-prone areas, particularly Ksar El Kebir, which faces recurring risks during heavy rainfall.
Recent floods have heightened concerns about the safety of existing infrastructure and the vulnerability of surrounding communities.
Still, the project is expected to face local resistance. Studies indicate that the dam’s reservoir could submerge large areas, including homes, schools, cemeteries, mosques, and economic and social infrastructure in affected communities such as Ain Beida and Brikcha in Ouazzane Province.
