Spain’s rail network came under renewed scrutiny after a train crash in the Barcelona metropolitan area killed one person on Tuesday, just two days after a separate deadly collision elsewhere in the country, intensifying pressure on authorities to review rail safety procedures and infrastructure.

Emergency services said the Barcelona incident occurred during regular service and left several passengers injured, prompting the temporary suspension of multiple lines in one of Spain’s busiest commuter corridors. T

he victim died at the scene, according to local officials.

The crash followed a fatal collision earlier this week that killed multiple people, including a train driver, raising questions about operational standards as two serious accidents struck within 48 hours.

Transport authorities have launched a formal investigation into the Barcelona crash, examining signaling systems, track conditions and onboard data, while the probe into the earlier incident remains ongoing.

Firefighters and medical teams were deployed within minutes, evacuating passengers and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Most injuries were described as non life threatening.

Spain operates one of Europe’s largest rail networks, but unions and safety experts have repeatedly warned about aging regional infrastructure, staffing pressure and uneven investment outside high speed lines.
