Remarks by Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan following his team’s elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations have triggered a wave of criticism across media and social platforms, overshadowing Morocco’s semi-final victory at Africa Cup of Nations 2025.
Speaking after Egypt’s defeat, Hassan suggested that “jealousy” toward Egypt’s football history may have played a role in preventing the Pharaohs from reaching the final.
His comments drew swift reaction, with analysts and commentators describing them as inappropriate and inconsistent with the outcome on the pitch, where Morocco secured qualification without controversy.
The backlash extended beyond Morocco. Saudi journalist Walid Al-Farraj criticised the remarks on X, saying they failed to reflect the values of fair play and did not represent the traditions of Egyptian football.
In Egypt, several public figures moved quickly to de-escalate tensions. Egyptian journalist Mai Helmy issued a public apology to Moroccans, stating that Hassan’s remarks were personal and did not reflect the views of the Egyptian team or its supporters.
She said Morocco’s qualification was deserved, praising the team’s performance and the conduct of Moroccan fans during the match.
“Attacking others after defeat has no justification,” Helmy said, adding that such statements harm Egypt’s image more than any sporting loss.
Moroccan artist Chaimaa Abdelaziz also urged distinction between the coach’s comments and Egyptian public opinion, pointing to measured reactions from Egyptian journalists and supporters.
As the controversy grew, the Egyptian Football Association issued an official message congratulating Fouzi Lekjaa, head of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football, on Morocco’s organisation of the tournament.
The statement praised the professionalism of the host nation and thanked Moroccan authorities for the reception given to the Egyptian delegation.
