Low cost airline Ryanair has taken another public swipe at Spain’s aviation policy, praising Morocco’s efforts to attract air traffic while accusing Madrid of neglecting regional airports.
In a social media post this week, the airline shared a scoreboard graphic showing Morocco “winning” against Spain, alongside a message criticizing what it called weak incentives and high airport costs in Spain.
Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary has repeatedly said aircraft will be deployed where taxes and fees are lower.
The comments come as Ryanair expands its footprint in Morocco, including the launch of a fifth base in Rabat with two aircraft and 20 routes planned for summer 2026.
Some Morocco routes have struggled to fill seats, with low load factors reported in 2025, forcing the airline to offer deep discounts.
Even so, Ryanair is pressing ahead as it cuts more than one million seats from Spanish airports this winter and a further 1.2 million next summer amid a dispute with Aena.
