As the Africa Cup of Nations gets underway in Morocco, fans have reported a rise in black market ticket sales, particularly after tickets for Morocco’s remaining group stage matches sold out on the official platform and resurfaced on social media at sharply inflated prices.
Moroccan judicial police have launched investigations, under the supervision of public prosecutors, into the suspected illegal resale of tournament tickets.
An official security source said cyber monitoring units identified online posts offering tickets in violation of the law, leading to the arrest of eight suspects in Rabat, Temara, Salé, Marrakech, Agadir and Mohammedia.
The suspects are under judicial investigation as authorities seek to identify possible wider networks.
Cybersecurity expert Taieb El Hazzaz said ticket scalping is a recurring phenomenon at major global sporting events but warned against amplifying isolated cases to cast doubt on tournament organization. Consumer rights advocate Bouazza El Kharrati called for stricter legal action, limits on bulk ticket purchases and greater platform accountability, saying unchecked resale practices ultimately harm fans and inflate prices.
