Moroccan authorities launched an investigation Wednesday following the collapse of two adjacent buildings in Fez that killed 22 people and injured 16 others.
The public prosecutor in Fez instructed judicial police to determine the causes of the incident and examine building permits and architectural plans. Officials are expected to question local urban planning authorities and other parties involved in the construction process.
Fez Governor Khalid Ait Taleb convened an urgent meeting Wednesday morning with representatives from the urban planning and housing departments, local authorities, and other stakeholders. The session emphasized reviewing permits, monitoring construction, and identifying buildings at risk to prevent future collapses.
Local authorities reported that the collapsed buildings, each four stories high, housed eight families. Emergency responders, including civil protection and security forces, immediately secured the area, evacuated nearby residents, and began rescue operations.
Injured individuals were transported to Fez University Hospital for treatment. Rescue teams continue to search for potential victims trapped under the rubble.
