The death toll from the collapse of two houses in the Ben Souda district of Fez rose to 22 on Wednesday morning, with 16 others injured, a government source told Hespress AR. The figures were reported as of 9 a.m. on Dec. 10.
Rescue operations were still underway at the scene in the Massira area, where Civil Protection teams continued clearing debris amid concerns that additional victims may still be trapped beneath the rubble. The injured were transported to a hospital for treatment.
Local and security authorities responded immediately after the collapse, securing the surrounding area and evacuating nearby residents as a precaution to ensure public safety, the source said.
The official described the numbers as preliminary and subject to revision as rescue teams progress and more technical information becomes available regarding the cause of the collapse.
