Preliminary assessments suggest that the fatal collapse of two residential buildings in Fez, which killed 19 people and injured 16, was likely caused by illegal construction.
A responsible source revealed that the initial building permits authorized only two floors, but the owners illegally added two more floors, resulting in four-story structures.
The buildings were part of a 2007 restructuring program for a former slum area in the Al Massira urban district. Owners were granted plots of land and given permits for two-story homes but violated the official building regulations.
The source emphasized that while complete technical data is still needed, the violation of the building license is the primary suspected cause of the collapse that occurred overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday (December 9th–10th).
The two collapsed buildings housed eight families. Local authorities and Civil Protection services responded quickly to the scene, where search and rescue operations are ongoing. The injured have been transferred to the Fez University Hospital Center. Neighboring homes were evacuated as a safety precaution.
