Morocco is among the world’s top 10 taxi-scam hotspots, ranking eighth, according to a Reddit-based study cited by the British Independent.

The study, conducted by travel insurer AllClear, analyzed more than 450 Reddit posts and over 30,000 comments discussing taxi scams to identify the countries that attract the most complaints.

Morocco recorded 1,329 mentions. The United States also made the top 10, coming in ninth with 1,283 comments.

Turkey topped the list by a wide margin with 4,224 comments, followed by India with 2,301, Thailand with 2,169, Vietnam with 1,741, Egypt with 1,715, Australia with 1,598, and Mexico with 1,367. Canada ranked tenth with 995 mentions.

Outside the top 10 were France with 957, Colombia with 924, the Philippines with 840, Italy with 832, and Norway with 799.

The study found that airports were a recurring trigger for complaints, with nearly a third of the posts mentioning an airport in the title, along with a steady stream of advice from travelers seeking to help others avoid similar scams.

The issue of taxi scams in Morocco remains widespread, with tourists, especially in Marrakech, often facing overcharging and meter refusal, prompting authorities to strengthen regulations and introduce pre-booking systems.

According to media reports, complaints about taxi abuse have risen 40% in 2024 compared to the previous year, alarming consumer protection groups who criticize authorities for lax enforcement.
