Morocco’s high-speed Al Boraq trains transported 5.6 million passengers in 2025, continuing strong growth in the rail sector, the National Railways Office (ONCF) said Thursday.

The figures were presented during the ONCF board meeting in Rabat, chaired by Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Qaiouh. The meeting reviewed projected performance for 2025 and approved draft budgets for 2026.

According to the operator, total passenger rail traffic is expected to reach 56 million travelers this year, generating 2.9 billion dirhams in revenue. Freight activity also continued to rebound, with phosphate shipments projected at 13.9 million tons, bringing in more than 1.2 billion dirhams. General freight is expected to exceed 9 million tons for about 710 million dirhams in revenue.

Overall, ONCF forecasts its 2025 turnover will surpass 5 billion dirhams, driven by sustained passenger demand and stronger goods transport.

Qaiouh said the sector’s transformation reflects long-term planning supported by major national projects and the guidance of King Mohammed VI. He described the King’s 96 billion-dirham rail investment program, launched April 24, 2025, as a turning point for low-carbon mobility and balanced regional development.

ONCF director-general Mohamed Rabie Khlie said 2025 marks the rollout of the largest investment plan in the operator’s history. The program includes extending the high-speed line to Marrakesh, purchasing new trains, building next-generation stations, expanding regional networks and upgrading existing infrastructure.

The operator expects activity to continue rising next year. Passenger numbers are forecast to reach 58.5 million in 2026, a 4% increase from 2025 projections. Combined freight and phosphate volumes are also expected to grow 4% to 24 million tons. ONCF is targeting 5.4 billion dirhams in revenue for 2026.

Investment spending is projected to reach 18 billion dirhams this year, with 23 billion planned for 2026. The expansion program includes a strengthened environmental, social and governance strategy aimed at boosting sustainability and broadening the sector’s impact on local communities.
