Prominent Moroccan human rights activist Sion Assidon, a Jewish Moroccan known for his staunch opposition to Zionism and tireless advocacy for Palestinian rights, has died at the age of 78, his friends and fellow activists announced Thursday.
In a statement, his close associates said Assidon’s health had deteriorated sharply this week after spending nearly three months in a coma. They reported that a recurring lung infection had returned “with greater severity” and ultimately proved fatal despite the efforts of the medical team, whom they thanked for their dedication.
Assidon was a founding member of Transparency Morocco and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in Morocco, among other organizations. His colleagues described him as a “tireless fighter against genocide and war crimes committed by the colonial Israeli state.”
According to the statement, Assidon had shown “encouraging signs of recovery” in recent weeks — briefly opening his eyes, following voices with his gaze, and attempting to speak. “He even managed to move his arm slightly,” they added.
The group also called for clarity on the circumstances surrounding his illness and death, stressing the need for forensic investigations and medical reports. They said that during a visit to the public prosecutor at the Casablanca Court of Appeals on Nov. 4, accompanied by three lawyers, they reiterated their demand for transparency.
Friends and fellow activists expressed deep sorrow over Assidon’s passing and extended condolences to his children, family, and supporters, thanking the hundreds of visitors who came to show love and solidarity during his illness.
