Morocco was among twelve countries that abstained Wednesday during a United Nations General Assembly vote calling for an end to the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba, according to international media reports. The resolution passed with 165 votes in favor, seven against, and twelve abstentions.
Countries voting against included the United States, Israel, Hungary, Argentina, North Macedonia, Paraguay, and Ukraine. Other abstaining states reportedly included Albania, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania.
The nonbinding resolution urges Washington to lift restrictions preventing Cuba from trading and conducting international transactions in U.S. dollars. The annual vote has been held since 1992, with near-unanimous global opposition to the embargo, which dates back to 1960. Official UN voting records confirming Morocco’s abstention have not yet been published.
