Before UN Security Council, Morocco Reaffirms Absolute Solidarity with Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom of Morocco reaffirmed, on Thursday during a UN Security Council Arria formula meeting, its “support and absolute solidarity” with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following the “cowardly” attacks perpetrated by Houthi rebels.

“I wish to reaffirm, on behalf of the Kingdom of Morocco, our support and absolute solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following the cowardly attacks perpetrated by the Houthi group,” stated Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, during the meeting organized by the Kingdom of Bahrain, a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

The Kingdom of Morocco, the minister added, condemns in the strongest terms the attack carried out by the Houthis against the holy city of Mecca, emphasizing that Morocco “supports all measures taken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to protect its territory and ensure the safety of its population.”

During the meeting, held under the theme “Safe seas, shared security: Protecting freedom of navigation in an evolving security environment” Bourita highlighted that the Houthi attempt to control the Bab al-Mandab Strait “reminds us that the security of international straits is no longer limited to states alone but is now threatened by non-state actors.”

This reality, the minister argued, requires the international community to reconsider its approaches. Furthermore, Bourita noted that the Strait of Hormuz crisis has highlighted a bitter reality: despite the existence of a legal framework, the international community still lacks mechanisms capable of preventing crises or managing them when they arise.

The meeting, attended by members of the Security Council as well as UN member states and subject-matter experts, provided an opportunity to emphasize the imperative of rapidly reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reaching a swift solution to the crisis in the Strait of Bab al-Mandab.
