Japan Tobacco International (JTI) is preparing to launch its new MAD 931.2 million factory in Tetouan Park, within the Tanger Med industrial zone, by the end of 2025, according to media reports.

Covering 4.7 hectares with a built-up area of 18,000 m2, this investment is expected to create over 170 direct jobs and additional indirect jobs, both on- and off-site, with 30% allocated to women.

The facility introduces JTI’s innovative Green Factory concept, representing a major step toward sustainable production in the tobacco industry.

The project aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, relying on an integrated environmental approach.

Approved by the National Investment Commission in January 2024, it is part of the 2023 Investment Charter and aligns with the Made in Morocco import-substitution policy launched in 2020.

Around 40% of the factory’s energy will come from solar power, while smart systems optimize heating, cooling, and LED lighting.

An advanced rainwater collection and recycling system will supply non-potable water, making the factory a unique model in the sector, the source added.

With this facility, JTI can now fully meet local demand, ending reliance on shipments from its Turkish plant. It also positions Morocco as a regional export hub for West Africa, leveraging its strategic location near the Tanger Med port.

The factory has an initial production capacity of 4 billion units per year and is designed to scale up to 10 billion units in the future without any structural changes.

The company previously said, in a press release, that Morocco was chosen for this project due to “its strategic position as a regional hub, world-class infrastructure, and strong commitment to sustainable development, particularly in renewable energy.”
