The US military plans to publicly execute Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009, with the execution set to be livestreamed, according to Politico.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, is scheduled to be executed by firing squad at 1 p.m. on December 3 at the military base where the shooting took place, the same time the attack began, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday.
The planned execution would be the first public one in the US in nearly 100 years. The last military execution took place in 1961, “when Army Private John Bennett was hanged for rape and attempted murder.”
“He’s going to get a firing squad of soldiers, as it should be,” Hegseth said, adding that the execution would be broadcast so the public could watch, an unprecedented move by the US government.
“People need to understand that there are serious consequences for these types of things,” he said.
In August 2013, Hasan was convicted by a military court and sentenced to death for killing 13 people and injuring more than 30 others in the November 2009 shooting.

The announcement comes just days after a failed execution attempt in Tennessee involving Christa Pike, who was convicted of killing a classmate in 1996. Pike survived two rounds of lethal injections on September 30.
