A senior Palestinian official expressed surprise over Morocco’s absence from the recent “Peace Summit” in Sharm El-Sheikh, saying the invitations were handled by Egypt in coordination with Washington.
The official, who requested anonymity, added that Palestine itself was initially left out before a last-minute invitation was extended to President Mahmoud Abbas, in a statement to Hespress AR.
The source stressed that Morocco “plays an influential regional and international role” and should have been invited, citing its “strong ties with all regional parties and previous mediation efforts,” including pressuring Israel to release withheld tax revenues and reopen the Karameh border crossing with Jordan.
He also noted that France and the EU are seeking to revive the two-state solution, following a recent UN conference co-sponsored by Saudi Arabia and France, which led to 11 new recognitions of the State of Palestine.
During the same day in Moscow, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita praised Donald Trump’s role in achieving a Gaza cease-fire and urged all parties to uphold its terms.
The Sharm El-Sheikh summit gathered senior representatives from the United States, France, Germany, the UK, Italy, and several Arab nations, to discuss post-war arrangements in Gaza and Trump’s plan for Israeli withdrawal and prisoner exchanges.
