Morocco’s Interior Ministry said Thursday that violent unrest in Lqliaa, Inzegane Ait Melloul municipality, resulted in three deaths, after rioters attempted to storm a Royal Gendarmerie post and seize weapons and ammunition.
Government spokesman Rachid El Khalfi told reporters the incidents, which broke out Wednesday in several parts of the country, “took on far more dangerous dimensions,” as groups armed with knives attacked state buildings and security premises.
In the town of Lqliaa, he said, rioters tried to overrun a gendarmerie center, prompting forces to open fire “in legitimate self-defense,” which resulted in three deaths.
The ministry vowed to uphold its institutional responsibility under the constitution to maintain order and ensure rights and freedoms within the law. Authorities said they remain committed to protecting public safety and will continue interventions to deter violent actions and prevent further escalation.
