Moroccan authorities have detained 70 people over violence near the Bab Sebta border crossing, including suspected attempted murder, arson and destruction of public and private property, Assabah daily reported on Saturday.
The arrests followed unrest on Thursday night during mass attempts to reach the Spanish-controlled enclave of Ceuta, according to sources cited by the newspaper.
Prosecutors are investigating the suspects over serious criminal offenses, including attempted intentional homicide, deliberately setting fires, damaging state property and attacking privately owned assets.
The violence caused extensive material losses. Sixteen cars and one bus were completely burned, while 39 other vehicles sustained varying levels of damage from vandalism and stone-throwing, the report said.
The area around the crossing remained calm on Friday night and Saturday morning after several days of tension and disorder. Security forces continued patrolling the border and monitoring developments on the ground.
Assabah also reported that some people who had travelled to the area hoping to cross irregularly had begun returning voluntarily to their home cities and regions since Friday morning.
The departures indicated that pressure around Bab Sebta was easing, although authorities remained on alert for further gatherings or renewed crossing attempts.
