A fire broke out Sunday night in the control tower of Zagora Airport in southeastern Morocco but was quickly contained without injuries or disruptions to airport operations, the National Airports Authority said.
The blaze started at 8:12 p.m. local time and was brought under control by 9:30 p.m. thanks to a coordinated response by airport staff, the National Airports Authority and civil protection units, the agency said in a statement.
Emergency safety systems were immediately activated, allowing crews to extinguish the fire swiftly.
The authority said flight operations continued normally, with organizational and technical measures taken to ensure the safety of travelers and airport users.
The authority praised the “exceptional work” of teams on site, which it said restored the situation quickly and secured uninterrupted airport activity.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
Zagora Airport, located about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from the city center in the Draa-Tafilalet region, opened a modern passenger terminal in 2019.
The airport primarily serves domestic flights operated by Royal Air Maroc and Air Arabia Maroc, linking Zagora with Casablanca, Ouarzazate and Marrakesh.
