Moroccan human rights defender Sion Assidon remains in intensive care in a coma, though relatives said Wednesday there have been “slight signs of improvement” in his condition.
On the advice of his medical team, visits to Assidon have been banned to protect him from possible infection. Only one close relative is authorized to communicate with doctors and administrators overseeing his care.
Doctors determined that Assidon developed a lung infection following a brain hemorrhage that left him comatose. Antibiotics have been prescribed to fight the infection.
Friends of Assidon said they met with senior medical and administrative staff, who acknowledged the severity of his condition but assured them that “all necessary medical efforts” were being undertaken and promised to keep relatives updated.
Assidon, a former political prisoner during Morocco’s “Years of Lead,” is a prominent activist known for his work against corruption and his leadership of the Moroccan branch of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Authorities said Assidon was found unconscious on a sofa in his Casablanca home, with no signs of forced entry or disturbance. Security cameras recorded his last activity outside as pruning trees before he was discovered by police two days later, alerted by employees who reported his absence.
