Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water launched on Wednesday a major project to double a section of the regional water transfer canal from the Moulay Abdellah dam north of Agadir, aimed at securing drinking water supply for the Souss-Massa region.

The strategic project will channel treated water from the Tamri plant, expanded to a capacity of 1,100 liters per second, toward Agadir reservoirs, and carry an additional 200 liters per second expected from two new seawater desalination units under construction.

It is designed to reinforce supply during maintenance periods at the Agadir- Chtouka Ait Baha desalination facility and improve the management of surface water from the Abdelmoumen and Moulay Abdellah dams.

ONEE director-general Tarik Hamane told reporters the project, costing 132 million dirhams, involves the installation of 13 kilometers of coated steel pipelines measuring one meter in diameter and is scheduled to enter service in December 2025.
