Morocco nears deal for US F-35 stealth fighters
Sunday 17 August 2025 - 19:31

Morocco is on the verge of securing a major deal for 32 F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters from US defense company Lockheed Martin, according to Africa Military, a site specializing in African military and defense affairs.

If the deal goes through, Morocco would become the first Arab and African country to operate these fifth-generation stealth jets.

The acquisition is expected to cost around $17 billion over 45 years, covering not only the purchase of the aircraft but also maintenance, training, and long-term support.

Approval from Israel remains a crucial step, given its influence over sensitive military technology sales to Arab countries.

The F-35 is a multi-role fighter with stealth capabilities, advanced electronic systems, and a high-performance engine capable of speeds above Mach 1.6.

Its combat range is approximately 669 nautical miles, with variations depending on the model. Morocco plans to integrate the F-35s with its existing F-16 fleet through joint training protocols aligned with NATO standards.

Officials aim to reach operational readiness by 2035, enhancing the country’s air capabilities significantly.

Algeria has reacted to Morocco’s plans as a direct challenge to its regional air superiority. In response, it is pursuing Russian Su-57 stealth fighters and has previously ordered Su-35 jets to strengthen its Su-30MKA fleet.

The Su-57 features advanced stealth, electronic systems, and maneuverability designed to rival Western fifth-generation fighters.

Africa Military said that these procurement paths reflect wider strategic divisions in North Africa.

Morocco is strengthening partnerships with the United States and Israel, while Algeria remains aligned with Russia.

Egypt is also monitoring the regional build-up, exploring Chinese fighter jets such as the J-10C and J-31 to modernize its air force amid strained relations with Washington.

Experts say that Morocco’s acquisition of F-35 jets could shift the balance of power in North Africa, influence the Sahara conflict, and trigger a new regional arms race.

The deal may not only redefine air capabilities but also reshape alliances, test regional security, and increase tensions in the Mediterranean.
