The Moroccan Front for the Support of Palestine and Against Normalization says prominent activist Sion Assidon was found with unexplained injuries to his head and shoulder when police entered his home earlier this week.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the group said police and two close associates forced entry into Assidon’s residence in Mohammedia on Monday, August 11, after losing contact with him.
Assidon was found slumped on a chair and unconscious, before being rushed to a clinic where he underwent brain surgery.
Doctors later confirmed he had bleeding in both the brain and lungs. Assidon remains on a ventilator in intensive care.
The group described the circumstances as “highly suspicious” and urged authorities to fully investigate the incident.
The group said that the possibility of a targeted attack “remains on the table” given Assidon’s high-profile role in the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and his long-standing opposition to normalization with Israel.
Assidon, a veteran leftist, former political prisoner, and member of a prominent Moroccan Jewish family, has spent decades campaigning for Palestinian rights and against Israeli policies.
The Front called on health authorities to provide him with the best possible care and share his full medical file with his family. It also said it will keep its leadership in open session to track developments and update the public.
Born in Agadir into a well-known Moroccan Jewish family, he became politically active as a student in France in the 1960s, influenced by the wave of anti-colonial and Marxist thought of the era.
Upon returning to Morocco, he joined leftist movements critical of the monarchy, which led to his arrest during the “Years of Lead,” a period marked by political repression. He spent more than a decade in prison before his release in the mid-1980s.
