A coalition of Arab lawyers, including prominent Moroccan attorneys, has sharply criticized the reported intention to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, calling the move a “disgrace” and a betrayal of the award’s founding principles.
In a formal letter addressed to the Nobel Committee, the Arab Legal Committee for the Prosecution of War Criminals in the Zionist Entity, chaired by Moroccan lawyer Khalid Sefiani, condemned the possible nomination and urged the committee to reject it outright. The signatories include lawyers and legal figures from Morocco, Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Iraq, and Libya.
“This potential nomination is itself a crime against the legacy of Alfred Nobel,” the letter read, adding that the Peace Prize should be reserved for those who defend human rights and international law, not “war financiers, genocide inciters, or human rights violators.”
The signatories argue that Trump’s track record runs counter to the values the prize is meant to honor. They accuse him of supporting armed conflicts, backing authoritarian regimes, undermining international institutions, and shielding war criminals from accountability, particularly in relation to his administration’s unwavering support for Israel.
The letter accuses Trump of being “personally complicit in crimes against humanity” in Gaza and Palestine, and of using the U.S. veto at the UN Security Council to block resolutions aimed at halting military action against civilians. It also criticizes Trump for allegedly interfering with the International Criminal Court (ICC) and imposing sanctions on its judges after they pursued investigations into Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Trump promotes war, profits from it, and emboldens military powers to starve and bomb women, children, and the elderly,” the lawyers wrote. “Awarding him would be an affront to the moral and humanitarian reputation of the Nobel Peace Prize.”
The letter also cited Trump’s controversial domestic record, including his stance on immigration, the construction of a border wall, and the 34 felony counts he was convicted of in New York earlier this year related to document fraud and election interference.
The lawyers urged the Nobel Committee to preserve the integrity of the prize and resist pressure from political lobbies seeking to “whitewash the image” of what they described as a “major arms dealer” and “war advocate.”
Instead, they called on the committee to consider nominees who have “demonstrated a true commitment to peace,” including individuals like Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, and institutions such as the ICC.
The lawyers’ appeal comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the Nobel Peace Prize. Past recipients, such as Henry Kissinger, former Israeli leaders Menachem Begin and Shimon Peres, and former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, have also drawn criticism from human rights groups for their alleged roles in conflict and repression.
The letter concludes with a direct appeal to the Nobel Committee: “You carry the responsibility of upholding the credibility and dignity of this honor. Do not let it be tarnished by honoring a man whose legacy contradicts everything the prize stands for.”
No official nomination of Donald Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been confirmed by the Nobel Committee, which does not comment on individual nominations.
