King Mohammed VI of Morocco delivered a national address Tuesday evening marking the 26th anniversary of his ascension to the throne, calling for timely preparations for next year’s legislative elections and reaffirming his commitment to dialogue with neighboring Algeria.
Speaking on Throne Day, the monarch emphasized the importance of finalizing the legal and procedural framework for the 2026 parliamentary elections before the end of this year. “We are about a year away from the next legislative elections, which are to be held on schedule,” the King said.
“It is essential to ensure that the entire framework governing the elections to the House of Representatives is established and publicly known before the end of the year.”
The King announced that he had instructed the Minister of the Interior to begin preparations and to open consultations with political stakeholders to ensure smooth and transparent elections.
Turning to foreign relations, King Mohammed VI focused on Morocco’s regional ties, particularly with Algeria. “While we continue to consolidate Morocco’s standing as a rising nation, we reaffirm our commitment to openness with our regional environment, especially our immediate neighborhood and our relationship with the Algerian people,” he said.
“As King of Morocco, my position is clear and unwavering: the Algerian people are our brothers,” he added. “We share deep historical and human ties, along with language, religion, geography, and a common destiny. That is why I have consistently extended my hand to our Algerian brothers and expressed Morocco’s readiness for a frank, responsible, and sincere dialogue on all outstanding issues.”
He described this outreach as rooted in “a firm belief in the unity of our peoples and our shared ability to overcome the current unfortunate situation.”
The monarch also reiterated Morocco’s commitment to Maghreb unity, saying it cannot be achieved without active cooperation between Morocco, Algeria, and the rest of the region.
On the Sahara issue, the King welcomed growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal. “We are proud of the increasing international backing for the autonomy initiative as the only solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara,” he said.
He singled out the United Kingdom and Portugal for their “constructive positions,” supporting Moroccan sovereignty over the region and reinforcing similar stances from other nations.
“While we appreciate these positions that support justice and legitimacy, we also reaffirm our commitment to a consensual solution, one in which there are no winners or losers, and the dignity of all parties is preserved,” he said.
