The Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health (FM6SS) achieved a milestone in robotic surgery Thursday, July 24 with the successful completion of its first robot-assisted visceral operation at Cheikh Khalifa International University Hospital.
Dr. El Mehdi Choukri, digestive surgeon at FM6SS, led the procedure of a rectal resection for colorectal cancer using the “Da Vinci” surgical robot.
The system is internationally known for its high precision and minimally invasive capabilities.
This surgery represents the second phase in the FM6SS’s expansion of robotic surgery. The program’s initial phase focused on urology, specifically radical prostatectomies, performed according to standards set by the robot’s equipment provider, said Professor Khalid Sair, general director of FM6SS Casablanca.
“Due to growing demand for innovative surgical approaches, we are broadening the use of robotic techniques to include complex digestive surgeries, often carried out in narrow anatomical spaces,” Sair said in a statement to MAP.
He added, “The robot allows surgeons to operate with extreme precision, especially when preserving vital organs and tissues deep within the body. It helps limit bleeding and reduces postoperative risks.”
Dr. Choukri emphasized that the surgeon remains in full control, manipulating robotic arms via a console with exceptional finesse. The Da Vinci system also provides high-definition 3D visualization, enabling access to complex areas with remarkable accuracy.
