Morocco’s automotive industry maintained its lead as the country’s top export sector for the second consecutive year, with overseas sales rising 6.3% to MAD 157.6 billion in 2024, according to the Foreign Exchange Office.
The sector’s performance was driven primarily by gains in the construction ecosystem and wiring segment, each contributing an additional MAD 3.3 billion in exports, the Office noted in its 2024 Foreign Trade Report.
Phosphates and derivatives ranked as the second-largest export sector, with exports increasing by 13.5% to MAD 87.1 billion. This rebound follows a sharp 33.6% decline in 2023. All key products within the segment posted growth: natural and chemical fertilizers (+14.4%), phosphoric acid (+11.5%), and phosphate rock (+10.6%).
Agricultural and agri-food exports resumed growth after a flat performance in 2023, reaching MAD 87 billion in 2024, bolstered by a 9.1% increase in sales from agriculture, forestry, and hunting activities.
Aerospace exports posted a notable 14.9% gain, supported primarily by a 23.6% jump in sales from the assembly ecosystem.
By contrast, the textile and leather sector saw a slight decline of 0.5% in exports, totaling MAD 45.9 billion in 2024, driven by reduced exports of footwear and technical textiles, although sales of knitwear and ready-made garments recorded increases.
Exports in the electronics and electrical sector remained stable over the year. Growth in exports of insulated wires, cables, and other electrical conductors (+MAD 369 million), as well as circuit breakers and resistors (+MAD 367 million), was offset by a MAD 723 million drop in electronic component exports.
On a product level, seven key items accounted for 56.3% of Morocco’s total exports in 2024.
Passenger cars led the rankings, representing 14.9% of total exports, followed by natural and chemical fertilizers (14%) and insulated electrical wires and cables (10.5%). Other top export items included ready-made garments (6.5%), automotive parts and components (3.7%), aircraft and aerospace parts (3.5%), and phosphoric acid (3.2%).
