Morocco ramps up Brazilian beef imports to stabilize prices ahead of summer demand

Moroccan meat importers are continuing efforts to stabilize red meat prices on the national market by increasing imports of slaughter-ready calves, particularly from Brazil, professional sources told Hespress.

The move aims to curb further price hikes following a recent surge in meat costs, especially after Eid al-Adha, which saw high household demand due to the cancellation of ritual sacrifices this year.

According to sector insiders, Brazil remains the primary source of imported meat, offering more competitive prices than European suppliers. Roughly 70% of Morocco’s red meat imports currently originate from Brazil, with the remaining 30% sourced from various European countries.

Wholesale prices reflect these import trends. Brazilian beef is sold at between 70 and 75 dirhams per kilogram, while Spanish and locally produced meat ranges from 85 to 90 dirhams. At the retail level, prices vary from 90 to 130 dirhams per kilogram, depending on the origin and quality.

Industry professionals expect demand for red meat to rise in the coming weeks, fueled by the summer season’s weddings, festivals, and an influx of tourists.

This latest strategy follows an earlier spike in meat prices in the post-Eid period, as families stocked up on meat in the absence of traditional sacrifice practices. The increased reliance on imports, particularly from Brazil, is seen as a short-term solution to prevent prices from reaching new record highs.
