Northern Morocco sees strong signs of tourism boom in summer 2025

The northern region of Morocco, spanning Tangier, Tetouan, Al Hoceima, and Chefchaouen, is witnessing a significant tourism revival this year, pointing toward one of the strongest summer seasons in recent memory. Rising visitor numbers, improved infrastructure, and strong demand from both Moroccan and international travelers are fueling this upward trend.

The region of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima is benefiting from enhanced connectivity between cities and beaches, as well as the growing appeal of its historic medinas in Tangier, Tetouan, and Chefchaouen, which continue to attract visitors eager to experience their cultural richness and architectural charm.

Coastal cities in particular, including Tangier, Tetouan, and Al Hoceima, have seen a steady influx of tourists over the past few weeks. Tourism professionals anticipate that the 2025 summer season could be the most successful in years.

Supporting this optimistic outlook are recent statistics from the province of Tetouan, one of the region’s main tourist hubs. According to Mouncef Touab, president of the Tetouan Provincial Tourism Council, the province recorded 26,431 overnight stays in June alone, marking a 34% increase compared to June 2024. Hotel occupancy rates also rose, reaching 59%, up from 45% the previous year.

“These figures are a strong boost for the sector and confirm that Tetouan continues to be a preferred destination for thousands of Moroccan families,” said Touab. He emphasized the importance of coordination among tourism stakeholders to maintain momentum and ensure a successful season that solidifies the region’s position as a tourism leader in Morocco.

However, the surge in demand has led to a 30% increase in accommodation prices in some areas, including hotels and holiday rentals. Tourism professionals say this is a typical market response, driven by supply and demand dynamics.

Foreign visitors continue to play a major role in the region’s tourism, with Europeans from Spain, France, and the UKtopping the list. There’s also been a notable increase in tourists from Gulf countries, particularly during July and August. Meanwhile, domestic tourism remains a vital driver, with families traveling from Casablanca, Rabat, and Fes contributing significantly to occupancy rates.

Younes Tazi, Wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, confirmed during a recent regional council session that early indicators point to a successful summer season, underlining the impact of both completed and ongoing development projects aimed at making the sector more competitive.

As Morocco looks ahead to major international events, including the 2030 World Cup, this summer’s strong tourism performance is seen as a key milestone in the country’s broader economic and cultural positioning.
