Aya Boumezbra, a young Moroccan engineering student who captured national attention with her fight for life, has passed away in Paris. Sources confirmed to Hespress AR that the 23-year-old died Monday at Hôpital Paul-Brousse, where she had been awaiting a second liver transplant.
Boumezbra, who was in her fourth year at the National School of Engineering in Marrakech, had undergone a first successful liver transplant, which allowed her to resume a normal life for about a year. However, a recent infection led to serious complications, placing her in a coma for a week and triggering the urgent need for a second transplant.
Her story resonated with many across Morocco. The “Yallah Ntaawno” Association, in collaboration with Aya’s family, had worked tirelessly to raise funds for her treatment and transfer to France. The campaign garnered widespread support and brought national attention to both Aya’s condition and broader issues around access to life-saving treatments abroad.
Aya’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with tributes flooding in from classmates, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens who followed her journey with hope and solidarity.
As Morocco continues to grapple with the challenges of healthcare access and transplant logistics, Aya Boumezbra’s story serves as both a heartbreaking reminder of the system’s gaps and a testament to the collective compassion of Moroccan society.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.
