Morocco sees rising egg prices amid market tensions and supply questions

The retail price of eggs in Morocco has seen a noticeable increase in recent days, sparking renewed debate across the sector. Prices have climbed from MAD 0.85 to MAD 1.12 per egg at the farm gate, with industry sources anticipating potential further hikes.

The price surge has led to speculation over whether the rise is due to strategic production slowdowns by egg producers or external factors such as rising temperatures. However, industry voices remain divided on the root cause, with many pointing to traditional market dynamics.

Khalid El Idrissi, Secretary General of the National Association of Egg Traders and Distributors in Morocco, warned of what he described as a “silent crisis” affecting both the production and distribution of eggs. “We are seeing a noticeable decline in production,” El Idrissi told Hespress AR, citing widespread concern among distributors nationwide.

El Idrissi urged the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests to conduct field investigations and release official information to clarify the current situation. “The current price hike is significant and unexpected,” he added, stressing that farm-level prices rose by more than 30% in just a few weeks.

He noted that limited data is available to explain the price increase, raising questions about whether egg exports or environmental factors such as heat may be playing a role.

On the other side of the discussion, Hicham Derdari, a trader and sector actor, pushed back against the notion that production is down. “There’s no clear indication of a supply shortage at the moment,” Derdari said in remarks to Hespress, attributing the price movement primarily to the laws of supply and demand.

He also dismissed concerns about heat stress impacting production, arguing that most Moroccan egg farms are now outfitted with modern infrastructure that mitigates the effects of high temperatures. “We’ve moved past the days when heatwaves significantly affected production,” Derdari said.

According to Derdari, the current price increases appear to be a normal market reaction. “Prices tend to rise automatically when demand outpaces supply. Right now, there’s no evidence of a significant drop in production, and it wouldn’t make sense for producers to cut output in a profitable segment,” he explained.

As the debate between distributors and producers continues, consumers are left navigating higher prices at the market, with uncertainty over whether this is a temporary fluctuation or the start of a longer-term trend. Calls are mounting for greater transparency and regulatory oversight to prevent speculative behavior and ensure price stability in the sector.
