Morocco recorded 4,024 road deaths in 2024, up 5.37% from 2023, prompting authorities to launch an emergency summer safety plan. In the first five months of 2025 alone, traffic fatalities rose 20.9% year-on-year, reaching 1,624 deaths.

The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) unveiled the new plan Monday, focusing on July–September, the period with historically high accident rates.

Director General Benacer Boulaajoul cited rising fatalities among two- and three-wheeled vehicle users, who made up 43.19% of road deaths. Helmet non-use and frequent red-light violations were key causes. Pedestrian deaths remain high, with over 1,000 fatalities annually.

Measures include stepped-up speed controls, new urban surveillance systems, tougher helmet enforcement, and linking unpaid fines to administrative services. Public awareness campaigns and “road safety villages” will run in eight cities. NARSA described the plan as a strategic shift requiring broad mobilization to counter a worsening road safety crisis.
