Syria has informed Morocco of President Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s interest in making an official visit to the Kingdom, according to a report by i24NEWS, an Israeli news channel, citing a Syrian source.

This comes as political shifts in Syria lead to the resumption of communication between Moroccan and Syrian authorities, with Syria officially closing the Polisario Front office in Damascus—a group long supported by Algeria and closely linked to the Assad regime.

Syria has also sent a technical team to Morocco to inspect its embassy in Rabat, which has been closed since 2012, signaling a possible warming of ties, according to the same source, who emphasized that the planned visit comes amid efforts to normalize ties following the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

Last month, King Mohammed VI called for the reopening of the Moroccan embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since 2012 due to the outbreak of the Syrian civil war.

“This initiative reflects Morocco’s commitment to supporting the Syrian political process and to opening new horizons for strengthening historic bilateral ties between Rabat and Damascus,” the King previously stated.

While Syria has expressed interest in a presidential visit, Morocco has not yet responded.

The Israeli news channel also reported that officials in Rabat are proceeding cautiously, awaiting a clear gesture from Damascus—specifically, official recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara—before extending a formal invitation to Al-Sharaa.

As “the Sahara issue remains the lens through which Morocco views its international relations,” as King Mohammed VI emphasized in his speech marking the 69th anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People, the source added that recognition from Damascus is considered essential for any significant diplomatic progress.
