Northern regions of Morocco are experiencing a sharp rise in temperatures, surpassing 30°C in recent days and signaling the arrival of a scorching summer.
Authorities are ramping up preventive measures amid growing fears of forest fires, especially in heavily wooded areas.
According to sources in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, emergency protocols are already in effect. The National Agency for Water and Forests has placed its teams on full alert, particularly after meteorological warnings forecast highs of 38–45°C between Monday and Wednesday due to an advancing Saharan heat system.
Regional director Othman Azzawi told Hespress that surveillance efforts have intensified in coordination with multiple agencies. “This region remains one of the most at risk for wildfires,” he warned.
The concern is well-founded: the Houara forest near Tangier already saw its first major blaze of 2025, destroying 85 hectares and requiring week-long firefighting efforts supported by Canadair aircraft.
