Moroccans represent 11.7% of France’s immigrant population, making them the second-largest foreign-born group in the country after Algerians (12.2%), according to new statistics from France’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE).
The data, released this week, shows that France hosted 7.3 million immigrants in 2023 , around 10.7% of the total population. Of these, nearly 2.5 million individuals (34%) have acquired French nationality.
Moroccans are followed by Portuguese nationals (7.9%), Tunisians (4.8%), and Italians (3.9%). Overall, immigrants from the African continent account for 47.7% of the total foreign-born population in France.
In 2022, France recorded 331,000 new arrivals. Ukrainians made up the largest group at 12.2%, driven by the ongoing war, followed by Algerians (6.4%) and Moroccans (6.2%).
A large share of France’s immigrant population approximately 37%, resides in the Paris region. Employment figures show that 71% of immigrants aged 15 to 64 were employed in 2023, while unemployment affected 11% of immigrant men and 12% of immigrant women.
