BTR, a manufacturer of cathode and anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, affiliated with China Baoan Group, expects to generate approximately $1.2 billion per year from its operations in Morocco once production starts next year, according to Peter Yang, BTR’s General Manager in Morocco, in an interview with Asharq Bloomberg.

The company is currently constructing two factories within the Mohammed VI Tangier Tech Industrial City, which span a total of 486,000 square meters. These facilities will have a combined annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of cathodes and 60,000 tons of anodes, supported by an investment of $750 million, Yang revealed.

Yang also noted that Morocco is advancing rapidly in developing its electric vehicle battery sector through various initiatives led by both Chinese and local companies, including the upcoming opening of the country’s first battery factory next month.

The same source underscored that these projects aim to align Morocco with the global automotive industry’s transition to electric vehicles.

Emphasizing the scale of these projects, Yang told Asharq that they encompass the entire value chain, creating a fully integrated industrial ecosystem.

When production begins in the second quarter of next year, BTR’s output will be sufficient to supply components for roughly 500,000 electric vehicles annually, with the majority destined for export.

BTR, recognized as a major global supplier to prominent EV manufacturers such as China’s BYD and Tesla, secured a $300 million investment agreement with the Moroccan government last year to fund the initial phase of this project.

The Chinese company will handle the investment and construction phases, whereas the day-to-day operations will be managed by a project company that BTR’s subsidiary, Buno International Holding, plans to establish in Morocco.

The Kingdom is becoming a key player in the electric car industry, with Chinese companies investing in Morocco to establish factories.

These investments reach billions of dollars, benefitting the country’s economy and increasing job opportunities.

This makes the kingdom a key player in the EV manufacturing industry and puts it in a strategic position between the West and the East.
