Nador province has unveiled the main pillars of an ambitious tree-planting program aimed at covering 7,700 hectares by 2030. The plan, aligned with Morocco’s national “Forests of Morocco 2020–2030” strategy, was presented during a recent meeting chaired by provincial governor Jamal Chaarani.
The 2024–2026 phase includes afforestation of 900 hectares with a budget of 13 million MAD, and reforestation of 188 hectares in 2024, backed by 2.8 million MAD.
Additional activities in 2025 and 2026 bring the total budget to over 40 million MAD.
The initiative prioritizes climate-resilient native species like argan, carob, juniper, eucalyptus, acacia, and pine. A participatory approach involving forest users and compensation mechanisms for restricted grazing rights are also key components.
For the first time in the region, the Waterboxx irrigation technology will be used to improve water efficiency and planting success. New, extended contract frameworks aim to boost the program’s long-term impact and sustainability.
