Mental health crisis in Morocco sparks urgent calls for reform and coordination
Monday 19 May 2025 - 13:43

The International Observatory for Media and Human Rights has raised alarm over the growing presence of mentally ill individuals, both peaceful and aggressive, wandering public spaces unchecked, calling the situation a “serious social failure.”

In a statement, the group blamed the Moroccan government for chronic underinvestment in mental health infrastructure and for shelving Law 13-71, meant to replace outdated legislation dating back to 1959.

The Observatory urges accelerated reforms, including expanding mental health facilities, hiring more medical staff, involving private doctors temporarily, and deploying specialized ambulances for psychiatric emergencies.

It also called for improved care for migrants showing signs of psychological distress.
