Moroccan Christian communities are expressing hope that newly elected Pope Leo XIV will carry forward the reformist and compassionate legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis I, who died in late April.

Leo XIV, the first American to lead the Catholic Church, addressed the world Thursday from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. “I want this greeting of peace to enter our hearts, to reach your families, to all people wherever they may be, to all nations, to the entire world,” he said.

Moroccan Christians—ranging from Evangelicals and Copts to Catholics and Seventh-day Adventists—closely followed the conclave that led to the election of the 266th pope. Despite theological differences, community leaders say they are united in faith and in their desire for interreligious harmony and reform within the global Church.

Mostapha Soussi, secretary-general and spokesperson for the Coordination of Moroccan Christians, described Pope Francis as a “distinctive figure known for his reformist spirit and dedication to action.”

He added, “We hope the new Pope will continue these reforms, as all Christian denominations around the world need a truly courageous voice at the Vatican, still the largest spiritual congregation in the Christian world.”

Pastor Adam Rbati, leader of the Church of Glory in Temara and president of the Union of Moroccan Christians, said Pope Leo XIV appears well-suited to lead the Church in an era of global upheaval. He expressed hope the new pontiff will continue defending the poor and marginalized.

Rbati also highlighted the strong spiritual ties between Moroccan Christian groups and the Catholic Church. “Even if denominations differ in their beliefs and perceptions, their shared belonging to one faith unites them,” he said.

Both Soussi and Rbati emphasized the need for churches worldwide to remain beacons of hope, compassion, and peaceful coexistence, particularly amid rising ideological polarization.
