Two groups representing Moroccan Christians are seeking talks with political parties about religious freedom and participation ahead of the September 23 elections.

The Coordination of Moroccan Christians said it wanted parties, particularly those on the left, to address freedom of belief and the rights of religious minorities in their electoral and government programs.

Secretary-General Mustapha Soussi said several parties remained reluctant to engage publicly because they feared losing votes in the Muslim-majority country. The coordination has sought dialogue with political groups since about 2018, he added.

Because most electoral programs have already been prepared, the organization plans to pursue more detailed discussions after the vote.

The Union of Moroccan Christians said it had also approached several parties about its proposals and possible political participation. Its president, Adam Rabati, said an appeal sent through a senior member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party received no response.

The union, which is not formally authorized by Moroccan authorities, plans to encourage Christians to vote after reviewing candidates’ platforms.

Both groups said parties generally treated religious freedom as an individual position rather than adopting formal policies on non-Muslim Moroccans.
