Morocco has officially entered the Japanese citrus market with the arrival of its first container of Moroccan citrus fruits, Morocco Foodex announced Thursday.

Japan, Morocco’s 13th largest agro-food client, is known for its high standards in quality and traceability.

The successful export of Moroccan varieties like the popular Nadorcott demonstrates compliance with Japan’s strict health standards and opens the door for further diversification.

Japanese importers, including Yoichi Fukuda and Kento Takegami, praised the quality and appeal of Moroccan citrus among Japanese consumers.

Morocco Foodex is leading a trade mission in April with around ten Moroccan exporters to foster long-term partnerships through B2B meetings, market visits, and a targeted communication campaign in Tokyo.

In 2023, Moroccan agro-food exports to Japan reached 18,000 tons, worth 14 billion yen, and exporters aim to grow volumes by leveraging Morocco’s premium positioning.
