Morocco is adding 600 FIM-92K Stinger Block I missiles to its military equipment, following a deal approved by the U.S. State Department.

The agreement, worth around $825 million, includes not only the missiles but also technical, logistical, and engineering support.

The goal is to strengthen short-range air defense as Morocco continues to adapt its military to changing threats in the region.

These shoulder-fired missiles are mainly used to target low-flying threats such as drones and helicopters.

Abderrahmane Mekkaoui, a military affairs expert, told Hespress Ar that the decision to buy this type of weapon could improve the Moroccan army’s ability to deal with close-range air attacks.

“These missiles have shown their effectiveness in several conflicts, including Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said, adding that “they are particularly useful for hitting targets flying at low altitudes, such as unmanned drones or helicopters.”

Mekkaoui said that the U.S. approval of the deal reflects the depth of the military partnership between the two countries.

“The missiles are easy to carry and fit well into the Moroccan army’s existing logistical platforms, which should make it easier to integrate them into daily operations,” he said.

Mekkaoui noted that this purchase fits into Morocco’s broader plan to modernize its army and respond more effectively to different types of threats, especially in light of rising tensions in some parts of North and West Africa.

Researcher Hicham Mouatadid, who specializes in strategy and security, said this kind of missile deal is not just about buying new weapons. He sees it as part of a shift toward what he called “light deterrence.”

“Portable systems like the Stinger give the army more flexibility on the ground,” he explained. “They don’t replace heavy air defense systems, but they do reduce the army’s dependence on them, especially in fast-moving situations.”

Mouatadid said that these missiles are especially useful in a country like Morocco, where the geography ranges from mountains to desert.

“They can be deployed in different environments without needing much setup,” he said. He also mentioned that the deal includes training and support, which could help the army maintain and use the weapons more effectively in the long run.
