Online security threats such as cyberattacks are a “global and cross-border issue that can impact any country,” said Youssef Mazouz, international cybersecurity expert and secretary general of the African Centre for Coordination and Research in Cybersecurity.
In an interview with MAP on the sidelines of the 3rd GITEX Africa 2025 in Marrakech, Mazouz said cyberattacks can originate from anywhere in the world, making it particularly difficult to control or trace the geographic source of such threats.
“Absolute security doesn’t exist (…) but there are numerous tools and protective measures to counter online hackers, including through the use of AI,” he said.
He highlighted the critical importance of digital transformation, while warning that such advancements also carry risks on a global scale.
The Moroccan expert pointed in particular to “the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks,” driven by the growing use of artificial intelligence. “Hackers are using AI to design increasingly complex attacks,” he noted.
These technologies are now also being used to create and develop malicious software sold on the “Dark Web,” he warned.
Given this concerning reality, Mazouz underscored the urgency of adopting a comprehensive and coordinated cybersecurity approach, emphasizing that “we must take this global dimension into account and work together to ensure transnational protection.”
He also stressed the need for companies and institutions to implement cybersecurity solutions that meet the scale of current challenges.
“Cybersecurity solution providers must evolve constantly to keep up with hacker innovations. It is crucial to establish research and development laboratories to confront these increasingly effective threats,” he said.
